What is Carpentry Connect?
The Carpentries is a global community teaching researchers foundational coding and data science skills. Carpentry Connect NZ is a local event to bring together trainers, helpers, maintainers, and anyone interested in The Carpentries or building researchers’ digital skills. It’s a chance to exchange ideas, network, and collaborate.
All are welcome, whether you’ve been involved with training activities or The Carpentries for years or if you are just getting started.
In New Zealand, The Carpentries community is growing as more institutions and universities run Software Carpentry, Data Carpentry, and Library Carpentry workshops and have staff attend instructor training.

What happens at Carpentry Connect
Trainers, helpers, and maintainers from across Aotearoa engage with The Carpentries community in different ways but there is seldom a chance to learn from each other’s successes and challenges. This is why we host a day dedicated to networking and connection-building.
At Carpentry Connect events you can expect:
- An energizing update from the global Carpentries team (guest speaker TBD)
- Networking, games and icebreakers geared towards deepening community connections
- Open discussions on topics of interest (eg. how to maintain learner momentum after a running a Carpentries workshop, how to co-deliver Carpentries workshops, etc…)
- …and more!
